i can't deny THE WATCHMEN buzz...

so much buzz around the watchmen, and why not? you take probably one of the best graphic novels of all time and combine it with today's special fx, and you've got a pretty surefire recipe for epicness.
there is much more spotlight due to alan moore than the already bright one he's got on him. if you've never heard of the watchmen before the slew of publicity for the movie hit, then odds are you have no idea that The Watchmen is the only graphic novel to have ever won the Hugo Award.
but yes, take one look at this guy. you KNOW he writes good fucking stories.

io9 has also provided a great list of other that one should read (some of these have already been made into movies, which, moore apparently hates).
all in all, this guy is a fucking genius. i hold The Watchmen very dearly to my heart... we'll just see if the film measure's up an already perfect thing.

FINALLY!

seriously, after they cancelled arrested development, i couldn't stop thinking about it and being sad. but it looks optimistic for the arrested development movie according to killer film. it's about damn time. i've missed you mrs. featherbottom.
Photobucket

since uber died...

i used to have all my own artwork on uber but since uber is long gone, i'm transferring some my artwork onto this blog. hope you like it. more to come.

this was a project i did for my senior solo exhibition. they choose 1 senior every year and award them $500 for exhibition materials and give them a whole gallery room to show. i worked my ass off to get it and here was the end result.
i was working with the mythology of isis and how it related back to me in a very 'joseph campbell' kind of way. that led to thesophy which led to metaphysics, which led to, gee, trying to figure out the inner and outer workings of what makes every single thing tick. you can read the press written by two artists, douglas green and jason keller, here.

materials include: plexiglas, wood, fan, bovine heart in formaldahyde, scale, live emperor scorpions, black light, wood chips, plasma ball, various forms of light, alarm clocks, emergency blanket, ibprofen, drinking birds, spiderman robot, physics book, glow lights, concrete and aggregate, rubix cube, streamers, and ice.

show flyer

here is a piece i did a few months prior to the senior show:

"Cowboys Don't Eat Caviar", 2007
materials include: plexiglas, wood, electric kettle, taxidermied coyote head, live rabbit.

if anyone has any questions about these or want to discuss, feel free.
enjoy.

daily dose of art.

here are two artists to peep. david altmejd and elliott hundley. they both show at andrea rosen gallery and elliott also shows at regen projects (he has an opening at regen 3/7 from 6-8pm). i've been digging both these artists for a while.
both of their works are appealing to me for their palette, formalism, and eclectic materials.

david altmejd's work will often be composed of taxidermied animals, geodes/crystals, mirrors, branches, severed animal heads, and often times, slick, seductive materials like silver, gold, and highly finished minimal structures. it's the disparity between the decay and the growth, the macabre and the delicate that makes his work so compelling to look at... for me at least.
peep this:

"The Lovers", 2004

"Center", 2008

"Untitled (Dark)", 2001

*images from andrea rosen gallery's website

photo's don't really do justice to elliott's work. the work is insanely delicate (as many of the elements of the collages are held up merely by map pins) but they have an incredible amount of depth to them. really really fun to look at and get lost in. i've seen photos from his studio and my god, it looks like a whirlwind. but i think the implied process of his work is really beautiful. there must be a lot of reuse of different pieces of work. makes it interesting to think that the work seems to be like an ever-growing body that consumes, transforms, dies, and is reincarnated into something completely different.
here is also a few images of elliot hundley's work:

"Hyacinth", 2006

"Hyacinth", 2006 Detail

"Siren", 2006 installation view

"Deathless Aphrodite of the Spangled Mind", 2002-2003

so there's your daily dose. enjoy.

AVAF

Some cool artwork to check out: assume vivid astro focus. I saw one of their exhibitions a few years back at the MCA Chicago. They're an art collective that is also the alias of brazilian artist Eli Sudbrack and the name of an international group of visual and performance artists. You can check out the work at cheapcream.com. But just to give you a lil taste, check it out here:

end of day 1

it's nearing the end of the day and here's what I've summed up from today:

1. never put too much cayenne pepper in your lemonade.
2. this shit has made me very sleepy.
3. i have been cold allllll day. i think that's the result of not eating any solid foods.
4. i can't wait til this is over. i'm already thinking of foods i want to chow down on after this is over.
5. thank god it's the weekend.

peppery

GOD. i accidentally put 2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper in my lemonade drink/food thingy instead of 1/2 teaspoons. now i'm stuck at work for the next 7.5 hours with only spicy lemonade to eat/drink.

save me.

day 1

no activity down there. and i feel like i'm going to puke trying to chug this 1 qt of water with 2 teaspoons of uniodized salt in it. chugging salt water every morning? UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SOOOOOOOO GROSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

2 cups down, just gagged and puked a little.

now i'm staring at my last 2 cups waiting to see the course of action this alleged 'colon blaster' is supposed to take.

this shit is already miserable.

srsly gunna puke this salt water again.

mah mah mah masta cleanse

being a recent foodie, i've stumbled across a lot of food/nutrition blogs. i love finding out about new grains n' stuff to cook up and although my 'fine dining' experiences are few, i've had some. i fantasize about eating at places like chez panisse every day.
so on a more personal note, i've been reading up a lot on different diets, and diets, not in the sense of: losing weight diets, but more like raw foodists vs. vegetarians vs. omnivore vs. calorie restriction, etc etc the list goes on. so i thought, hey, i've been feeling a bit sluggish lately, i'm insanely dependent on coffee and chocolate, and in the end, it just makes me feel worse at the end of the day. i've heard rave reviews from friends about the master cleanse diet and how it's a great jump off point to start a more 'healthy' diet, so i'm going to do it.
i don't know for how many days yet, we'll see about that. if i can ween myself off of coffee (currently i drink about 2-3 cappuccino's per day) i would be a very very happy camper. so here it goes, tomorrow will be day one.
in preparation, i've had cheesecake and chocolate cake tonight... cuz hey, it's all gonna 'flush' out anyway right?
